Why go?

Scenic steps and scones at the summit

Winding through the hills of Victoria Park, the Harry Ell Track is a family-friendly walk that offers a gentle challenge and lovely views along the way. The track leads to the Sign of the Kiwi Café at the top, a cosy spot to rest and enjoy a drink, a snack, or even an ice cream. With natural surroundings to explore, benches for breaks, and a playground at the base, it’s a great choice for families wanting fresh air and a bit of adventure. It’s a good spot to begin or end your walk with time to play or relax.

Good to know

Before you go.

Dogs on lead

Dogs are allowed on the Harry Ell Track and at the café, but must remain on lead.

Toilets onsite

Toilets are available both at the café and at the bottom of the track in Victoria Park.

Route options

The track has some steep edges and can become muddy and slippery after rain, so care is needed — particularly with children moving quickly on the downhill sections.

Route options

Wild mushrooms can often be found growing along the edges of the track, so it’s a good idea to remind children not to touch them.

Walk guide

Follow the route.

Use these route notes alongside signs and conditions on the day.

  1. Climb to Sign of the Kiwi

The track gradually climbs for around 30–40 minutes each way to the Sign of the Kiwi. Benches along the route provide places to pause.

  2. Terrain and crossings

Uneven ground, incline and steep edges make this better suited to children over five. The track can become muddy and slippery after rain, and some sections cross a road, so keep children close.

  3. With younger children

Pram access is limited; a front pack is a more practical option. Drinking water is available near the toilets at the start and again around halfway.

  4. Return to Victoria Park

Return down the same track. Victoria Park at the base has toilets, a playground, picnic tables, open grass and city views.
