Why go?

A mini adventure with a rewarding view

The Halswell Quarry Rim Track is a short but satisfying walk with a big payoff. Climbing to the top of the quarry, it offers lovely views over the surrounding area and a great sense of adventure for children and adults alike. With uphill sections and options to take stairs or a ramp, the track is suitable for prams - though it does take some effort. Dogs are welcome on-lead, and a fenced off-leash dog park is available nearby. Whether you’re up for a brisk climb or taking it slow with little legs, this track is a great way to enjoy time outdoors. At the top, there’s a viewing platform with wide-reaching views over the surrounding neighbourhoods and hills — a great spot for a breather or a photo.

Walk guide

Follow the route.

Use these route notes alongside signs and conditions on the day.

  1. Rim Track · 20–40 minutes

Allow about 20 minutes, or up to 40 minutes with younger children or a pram. The path climbs steadily and is steep and uneven in sections.

  2. On the climb

The surface can be slippery after rain and downhill sections may be tricky for running children. Pram access is possible but requires effort on the incline.

  3. At the top

A viewing platform provides wide views over the surrounding neighbourhoods and hills. Picnic tables and a drinking fountain for people and dogs are available along the way.

  4. Return

Complete the rim route back into the quarry. Bikes are not permitted; dogs may use the track on lead, with a separate fenced off-leash park elsewhere in the quarry.

Where to start

For the gentler climb, especially with a pram, follow the quarry driveway to the far end near the picnic tables and toilets. This avoids the steeper, rockier approaches and provides ramp access where needed.

Finding the start

It can be slippery after wet weather, and children running downhill may find parts of the track tricky to navigate.
