This scenic wetland walk begins just across from Spencer Park, making it easy to turn your visit into a full family day out. With bird hides, viewing towers, and picnic spots along the way, it’s a peaceful nature escape with flexibility for different walking abilities. Some parts are pram-friendly, though terrain can be uneven in places. Brooklands Lagoon is accessed via the driveway to Adrenalin Forest, directly opposite Spencer Park.

Toilets nearby

For facilities, Spencer Park (just across the road) has toilets, a drinking fountain, a café-style shop selling drinks, snacks, coffee, and ice creams, as well as a large playground and access to the beach.

Not suitable for prams

The right-hand Waimakariri Walkway is not suitable for prams due to thick bush, sand, and uneven ground, though it may still appeal to older children on foot or those in a front pack, especially with the sound of the ocean nearby.

Route options

Once you reach the map sign, take the left track for the Brooklands Lagoon Walk if you’re using a pram.

Underfoot

Other parts still have thick grass or can become muddy after rain, and pram use may still be challenging.

Use these route notes alongside signs and conditions on the day.

  1. Choose the correct track

    The right-hand Waimakariri Walkway has thick bush, sand and uneven ground and is not pram-suitable. It may suit older children on foot or children in a front pack.

  2. Brooklands Lagoon route

    The track mixes recycled-plastic surface, thick grass and sections that can become muddy after rain. It is shared with bikes and horses, so remain alert.

  3. Useful landmarks

    Two lookout towers sit near the start. The first bench is about five minutes in, a bird hide about 15 minutes in and a picnic table about 30 minutes in.

  4. Turn around when it suits

    The walk is out-and-back, so continue as far as your family wishes before returning the same way. The picnic table makes a useful family turnaround point.

  5. Facilities nearby

    Spencer Park across the road has toilets, drinking water, a playground, beach access and a small animal park.

Where to start

Use the Adrenalin Forest driveway opposite Spencer Park. At the map sign choose the left-hand track for Brooklands Lagoon, particularly with a pram.
